Computing
Intent
As computing underpins today’s modern lifestyle it is essential that all children gain the confidence and ability that they need in this subject, to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world. The use of computing will enhance and extend their learning across the whole curriculum. Staff and children will have the resources and capability to access a wide range of devices in order to support their own independent learning. Within a safe learning environment they will recognise the value of computing for themselves and others whilst being aware of its advantages and limitations.
At St Joseph’s the computing curriculum is provides a rich, broad and balanced computing curriculum fully mapped to the National Curriculum for Computing across the key stages. It covers the three strands of the computing curriculum: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy.

The CSPP and Principals of Catholic Social Teaching are rooted in all our curriculum subjects throughout the school. Staff at St Joseph’s Primary School encourage children to demonstrate these values whilst learning about Computing by:
- Ensuring that the children treat all people on-line with respect and compassion holding fast to the CSPP values and principles of Catholic Social Teaching.
- That children are encouraged to persevere in figuring out any problems in computing and be creative in their solutions.
- Starting a computing journey through the school years from age 3 to age 11; that would equally serve as a model for adults in the IT community.
- To ‘move thoughtfully’ when using information technology.
What our Children Say…
“There are different ways to learn computing.” – Year 4 child
“I can expand my creativity digitally.” – Year 5 child
“I think Scratch is a great programme.” – Year 3 child
“I love being a digital leader.” – Year 6 child
Deepening Opportunities
We have an after-school computing club which children are encouraged to attend along with leadership opportunities in the form of Digital Leaders.
Safeguarding and Computing are closely linked and children throughout the school are given many opportunities both in the curriculum and in the form of visitors into school to learn about keeping safe online.
